Therapy for Teens & Young Adults Feeling Overwhelmed or Stuck
Support for anxiety, life transitions, and identity — in-person in Oakville.
In-person sessions in Oakville help teens stay focused, present, and engaged.
Hi, I'm Hayley. I work with teenagers and young adults who are dealing with big emotions they don't know what to do with.
Growing up, I went through my parents' divorce when I was five. I was afraid of my emotions and learned to cope by over-functioning and avoiding. What changed everything for me was learning to sit with my emotions instead of running from them.
Now I help students and young adults do the same — learn that emotions are information, not something to fear. That you can feel anxious and still show up for your life. That's what distress tolerance really means.

A Message to Parents
I know therapy might feel new to you. Maybe it's something you didn't have or feel you didn't need when you were your child's age.
One thing I want you to know: your kids are going through a lot more emotions than you might think. You get caught up in your lens, and it's so different from a 15-year-old's. It's hard to connect with where they're at because you've been out of that lens for so long.
Here's what I see happen in therapy with teenagers:
They learn to articulate their emotions better. First session versus 20 sessions in — their ability to understand and express how they're feeling is completely different.
They don't have the opportunity to really explore that and learn how to do that outside of therapy, unfortunately. That's what we do here.
Therapy isn't about them being "broken" or "less than." It's about giving them tools to navigate a world that's very different from the one you grew up in.
Many Teens I Work With Say…
Many teens I work with share things like:
• "School stress feels overwhelming."
• "My parents don't understand what I'm going through."
• "I feel anxious most of the time."
• "I compare myself to everyone else."
• "I don't know how to deal with everything I'm feeling."
• "I don't know what I'm doing with my life."
• "Everyone else seems ahead of me."

Meet Hayley Hope
Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), CRPO
I became a therapist because I've always been interested in learning the details about people. Selfishly, I really like learning about my clients and learning from my clients. But more than that, I love helping people live more fulfilling lives and develop strategies to manage the challenges that life throws at us.
Growing up in a family that went through divorce, and navigating normal transitions like high school to university and university to the working world, I was often overwhelmed by my emotions. I learned to cope by over-functioning and sometimes avoiding.
What helped me feel more in control, calm, and steady was learning to sit with my emotions. Learning that I can tolerate distress. Now when I feel a certain way, my response is with acceptance and clarity about next steps. I look at my emotions as information rather than something to run away from.
That's the skill I teach my clients.

What Makes My Approach Different
I'm down to earth and warm. I meet you exactly where you are, as you are.
A lot of clients come to therapy wanting to get rid of an emotion. I set realistic expectations: we're not getting rid of anxiety or depression. We're learning how to live with it.
Distress tolerance is about learning how to have an emotion, be there, and still grab coffee with a friend or go to a workout class or show up for work and feel okay. Not feel stuck in that emotion or trapped where it's robbing you from living your life.
Success with distress tolerance isn't in what happened — it's in what didn't happen. The positive choices you make in not indulging in a bad behavior because you're anxious, stressed, or depressed.
I use a lot of strength-based approaches. We investigate distorted thinking together — the assumption making, the mind reading, the paranoia. We separate what's a fact from what's just a feeling. Just because a feeling feels really strong doesn't mean the thought is true.
Usually there's something at the root — bullying, rejection, a moment that made you believe "because this happened before, this is my reality going forward." When we address where that came from, you can separate yourself and realize that's not necessarily your future.
"Most people come to therapy hoping to get rid of an emotion. What I actually help them do is develop the skill of tolerating it — so it doesn't stop them from living their life."
— Hayley Hope, RP (Qualifying)
Therapeutic Methods
In-Person & Virtual Options
In-Person Sessions in Oakville
132 Trafalgar Rd, Oakville
In-person therapy is a different experience for the better. The connection is just different when you're face to face.
For teenagers and young adults especially, in-person is ideal. It's more challenging to maintain focus for a whole hour virtually. Coming in person lets you get away from the distractions on your computer or tablet.
Body language plays a huge role too — leaning in, things you can't see me doing in session that help you feel more connected and safer in exploring whatever you need to explore.
In-person also gives you complete privacy from parents, siblings, or roommates. Sometimes clients show up differently in person — and that's where the real work happens.

Going Through Your Parents' Divorce?
I grew up as a child of divorce. My parents divorced when I was around five or six years old.
I struggled with a lot of separation anxiety. Going from one house to the next, the rules being different, the feelings being different in each home. Learning to adapt to both environments.
When parents are going through challenges in their relationship, sometimes we blame ourselves. Sometimes we don't have anyone to talk to because it doesn't feel comfortable going to one of our parents since they're the ones going through it.
Sometimes we end up being the shoulder to cry on for one of our parents — put in that therapist seat ourselves.
There's often a lot of shame attached to it too. You don't see your friends going through the same thing. You go to friends' houses and their home looks different — two parents in the home. When fitting in feels so important, this isolation can feel crushing.
If your parents are fighting or going through a divorce, this is my message to you:
It can be a very isolating experience, but it doesn't need to be. Therapy provides a space where you can explore those emotions and feel really validated, so the shame and guilt don't have to feel as heavy. You don't have to feel so alone. You don't have to burden your parents more.
I've been there. I get it.
